The North

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts The Burned Forest

One of the furthest north accessible places in Aktesh, The Burned Forest lays at the foot of the mountains, where the cold has been so harsh for years that its regrowth is stunted. Not much lives here save for plants and small rodents, which burrow underground to escape all extremes alike. The occasional bear will wander through searching for a den to hibernate in, but otherwise the air is still and cold year round.

No New Posts Hot Springs

Nestled in the mountains is a site of geothermal hot springs, a rare place of comfort in the otherwise unforgiving north. Pools of warm water bubble and spit, and hot steam curls off the surface, frosting the trees with ice. The water is rich in mineral content and has healing properties, making it a go-to place for wolves with severe cases of mange or other maladies. The wolves in the North often lounge in and around the springs to avoid the bone-chilling cold, especially in winter.

No New Posts The Bend

The Bend is a sharp curve in Grayling Creek and a fishing hole well-loved by Kodiian bears and wolves alike. Fish flow through the current year-round, and in spring, salmon infest the chilly waters, attracting many predators to the feast. A rocky hill overlooks the innermost banks, shrouded by tall, thin firs, and both sides of the banks are wide and pebbled, sometimes underwater when the creek overflows.

No New Posts The Pit

Most steer clear of the Pit with good reason: at its lowest point, it's only a 16 foot plunge into an inescapable hole. At its highest point, the 50 foot fall would break a wolf's neck. At the bottom is the gravely grave of many bones said to be haunted by the ghosts of those who fell. A small chamber underneath the overhanging rock offers some semblance of shelter for anyone unfortunate enough to get trapped within the steep, granite walls.

No New Posts Cardinal Meadow

Cardinal Meadow is one of the very few sanctuaries in the North, even providing for the hike it takes to reach it. The meadow offers many dug-out dens for roving wolves in search of a place to spend the night or to den in for a while. Deer occasionally pass through as well, albeit warily - wolf country is a dangerous place for them. It is home to many cardinals - birdsong fills the air year-round. The meadow was once camp for a sedentary, rather large (for northern standards) pack long ago, but a sickness decimated much of their numbers and the rest scattered.

No New Posts Bighorn Mount

Part of Kodiian Ridge, a branch off the Rifts, Bighorn Mount is the shortest and only accessible peak in the whole chain. A wolf who stands at its head can see for countless miles around. Herds of bighorn sheep can be seen scaling the precarious sides, but it's extremely difficult to hunt them, and most who attempt will find themselves plummeting hundreds of feet to their death. Catamounts, too, are sometimes seen skulking between the shadows, but rarely will a wolf catch more than a glimpse of one before it disappears.

The Midlands

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts Fossil Rock

Fossil Rock is a well-known gathering place in the Midlands, and perhaps one of the only non-religious landmarks of prominence in the heartland. Ancient fossils rest within the face of it; weathered tracks of humans and creatures no wolf has ever seen cluster the ground. A large cave worn by the wind and the rain into its side is decorated with long ago paintings depicting large, hairy, and heavy-looking four legged creatures chased by men with spears. The wolves of the Midlands consider Fossil Rock to be a place for all; any wolf wishing to claim it for their own will be met with hostility.

No New Posts The Spirit Woods

The Spirit Woods are still and quiet, made up entirely of pale birches. It's named for one of the Nine, Spirit, god of the forest and creator of the First Wolves. Small families of deer weave through here, but it's considered disrespectful to hunt in such a peaceful place. It is said that the souls of the First Wolves rest in some of the eldest birches.

No New Posts Anahala Plains

Anahala Plains is all rolling, endless hills and herds of elk on the surface, but under the earth is a vast network of tunnels. The rabbit warrens of Anahala Plains are the largest known to Aktesh, with some sections spanning miles and making the ground a bit treacherous. Small sections of forest grow on the rises, where much of the deer and elk are found. Some wolves even claim to have seen a rare jackalope racing along the plains.

No New Posts The Stone Teeth

Located in the very center of Aktesh are the Stone Teeth, a yawning mouth of nine stones set in the middle of a large field encircled by trees. It's a sacred place of worship for believers of the Nine, and the most important religious center in the Midlands, if not all of Aktesh. Over thousands of years, countless wolves have lain to die in sight of the Teeth; many old wolves will journey a hundred miles just to lay themselves to rest here. Once the flesh has decayed, acolytes will dispose of the bones. Eerily enough, the clearing does not reek of death, and scavengers do not eat the bodies.

The East

No New Posts Men's Abandoned Camp

An abandoned camp sits just above the high-tide mark, with several old and in-tatters yurts and tents strewn from just inside the forest to the beginnings of the beach. Fire pits still welling with ash and charred wood stink, and the area is strewn with bones, arrows, and filthy cloth and hide remnants. This aside, the beach offers close access to tide pools crawling with shellfish and minnows, and a fresh-water stream empties into the ocean here.

No New Posts Cave of the Seer

The Cave of the Seer's waters glow in the darkness, a luminescent gold said to be a manifestation of the god's power. Soaking in the water is said to lend a wolf heightened regenerative abilities, so ill wolves will often journey to this spot to cure themselves of sickness. A winding, steep shaft leads to the surface from deep within, the entrance a slit barely large enough to fit a wolf in. It opens into a forest near the shore, and the tunnel occasionally floods with water, making it slippery.

No New Posts Tamarack Forest

Once home to the second densest population of wolves in Aktesh, Tamarack Forest is now almost empty of life, for the most part. Human invaders have overrun it, setting up camp throughout the tall pines and cutting down the trees that are home to countless souls. Most of its former inhabitants have fled to the Midlands, but some wolves still remain in the shadows, fearful but too stubborn to abandon their homelands.

No New Posts Lake of Souls

Shrouded in mists, the Lake of Souls is perhaps the last area in the East that has not yet been claimed by humans. Before the invasion, wolves often sought solace here in the fog - the atmosphere demands silence. Some say they can hear the souls inside trees whisper here, while others say it's the mutterings of wolves buried beneath the earth, imprisoned forever in the mud, who speak here.

The Isle of Kuget

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts Sounder's Point

At the crown of the Forest of Whispers, Sounder's Point is an outcrop that leers over the western coast of the Isle of Kuget, a perfect vantage point. Some use this place to survey the beach, others come here for solitude and the view. Fog from the forest stretching out below occasionally obscures the point and it's view, which makes it a bit dangerous, but it's usually an unparalleled view of the rocky shores.

No New Posts Agrigo Coast

The Isle of Kuget's rockiest beaches are found in Agrigo Coast, where spires sharp enough to cut one-self on stand immovably on the sand and in the churning water. Seagulls make their nests on any open outcroppings, devouring the shellfish and minnows trapped in tide pools once the tide relents. Too rocky for ships to safely make it to shore, Agrigo Coast has spared the Isle from human presence, but not from the occasional whale carcass, which wolves happily feast on.

No New Posts Forest of Whispers

Towering, skinny pines grow dense together, pushing up to the sky from their precarious shelves up the rise in the Forest of Whispers. Fog climbs thickly between them, sometimes met by gusts of wind that cause the trees to quiver and murmur, hence the forest's name. The forest slopes gradually upwards, leading towards the highest point in the island: Sounder's Point. Herds of deer slip through the mist, and even the occasional Spirit bear cuts through the soup, but otherwise it's stalk still.

The South

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts Old Crow Flats

A sweep of marshland, Old Crow Flats, takes up much of the South, and is frequently flooded by storms thrown inland from the sea. Waterfowl breed and raise their young here all year, making nests in the muskeg and on the branches of spindly, drowning trees. Deer muck through the bog and make great meals for wolves swift enough to catch them - but beware, it's easy to twist a leg running in the mud. At the peak of high noon, the air grows warm enough to feel humid, though it's burned off by nightfall.

No New Posts Hain's Hole

Scooped out into the side of a hill, Hain's Hole is the most well known gathering place in the South, and a religious sanctuary for the Followers of Hain at that. Largely unaffected by flooding because of it's high ground, southern wolves hide here during the harshest of storms to make sure they aren't washed away, and many mothers choose to give birth and raise their pups through the most fragile stages here.

No New Posts Beaver Dam Woods

Beaver Dam Woods is aptly named and known for its abundance of beavers, but it holds far more than just rodents. The trees are thick with deer and the water swamped with birds, due to the woods being tucked behind a small mount that spares it from the worst floods. Packs often jockey to own these woods - and when unclaimed, loners will squabble relentlessly over who gets what small patch of land within it to hunt on.
